If you’re reading this article you’re either planning your wedding, in which case congratulations! Or you shoot weddings yourself. This article will certainly help both of you here!
So what is the big difference between wedding film making and wedding videography/cinematography?
Well… there is a huge difference!! But first let’s talk about what standard wedding videography actually is.
Now, if you’re here, there’s a good chance you’ve already seen your fair share of wedding highlight films on Youtube, Vimeo or even Facebook. The vast majority of which consist of lots of pretty images of the wedding day over some pretty music (pianos’, violins etc).
This is your bog standard highlights film, but ask yourself. Did you FEEL anything?
The chances are you didn’t and if i ask you why you’ll probably say something like “because i didn’t know them personally” and you’re absolutely right!
The vast majority of wedding videography is set out like this and although this might be effective in remembering what everything looked like on the day it doesn’t allow you to truly re-live those special moments.
If you’re familiar with our work then you’re probably well acquainted with your tissue box and for good reason! We take a different approach to the way we shoot and edit wedding films that’s core purpose is to make you feel how you felt on that day no matter how many years on you may decide to watch it. People that doesn’t even know you will get emotional!
How do we do it?
Let’s take a look at Hollywood.
Almost every film you have seen will spend a good portion of the beginning of the film providing you with a backstory of it’s main character or characters, this gives us an understanding of the story so far and what we’ve had to overcome to be where we find ourselves today. This could be using subtle visual ques that give us an insight into the personality of our character or perhaps outlining some troubling times which we will later overcome.
What this does to us is get us behind that character. Once we are fully invested and like this character we will start rooting for them going forward. This is how you end up on the edge of your seat whenever something really gripping is happening to he/she/them.
But what does this have to do with wedding film making?
Everything. But what it looks like is being told the story of how a couple met and what life was like at that time. It could be the story of the epic proposal or even a harrowing experience that happened and that your love for one another pulled you through it. Perhaps you had a forbidden love and it was difficult to be accepted, or a hilarious turn of events that happened to land you both unexpectedly in each others arms! Perhaps we have this in the style of an interview, or perhaps we actually visit these places and film on location. We have even gone as far as to do scene re-creations!
But all of this is back story, this is getting the audience invested in you both and really liking what you’re about. Now that we have that we can really begin to start pulling on the heart strings!
One tool we really like to use for our wedding films is very simple but very effective. This is a segment we call “the letters” whereby the bride and groom will write each other letters and swap them only to be read out on the morning of their wedding. This can either be a massive tear jerker or absolutely hilarious it’s all down to how you compose the letter but remember, we have the audience behind you at this point, if you’re like 99% of our brides you will start getting emotional reading these out! This in turn will be passed on to the viewer and they will to! Even if they didn’t even know you before! This also works for you, you will feel this emotion over again every time you watch your film back.
This turns the morning of the wedding which is typically (in videography) pretty shots of hair and make up with some music playing into something SO much more powerful and meaningful!
And THAT is the difference and that is exactly what wedding film making is all about, not just saying “we tell story’s” but actually delivering REAL emotions to back it all up.
We have a huge passion at James Thomas for delivering real, heartfelt and powerful wedding short films, not just highlights videos but Short films. That truly capture your story and truly reflect exactly how you felt on that day, in that moment. This is exactly why you get emotional even though you don’t even know who these people are!
Your wedding day is something worth remembering properly and it’s worth investing in that! Don’t just settle with wedding videography come and get yourself a cinematic wedding short film and re-live those emotions again and again!
